Clicky Knees! | MaeveMadden

Clicky Knees!

  • Hey there Queen's, does anyone else suffer from 'clicky' knees? My knees crack when I bend down on my hunkers, for as long as I can remember. But over the past week, I find my knees are clicking when I bend them at all during workouts and even when I walk. It nearly sounds like there are screws loose in them and rolling around - freaking me out. 🤢

If anyone has any good at home solutions or tricks let me know. Otherwise, it may be an appointment with a Physio that I need.

Thanks and hope you are all having a great week

    X

  • @Lesley Cosgrave I've always had clicky knees and joints since I was a child. Used to find it painful sometimes when I was dancing a lot when I was a teenager. Whenever I do barre ballet I start clicking everywhere and laugh at myself. I've had phone appointments with a physio because I have a lot of gut issues and they are pretty sure the two are linked, they think I have a condition called ehlers danlos syndrome but can't fully diagnose me until they see me in person.

I think if it's causing you issues and it's happening more often then it is worth seeing a physio for it. It's easy to assume it's normal when you've had it your whole life. x

  • @Amy Johnston Thanks Amy for this advice - this is very interesting, I've never heard of ehlers danlos syndrome. Maybe I'm just getting old and my screws are coming loose 😅
I think the change recently and the constant clicking while I walk is what has worried me, seems to be since I started queening. Physio time for sure I think!
Thanks again for your advice x

  • @Lesley Cosgrave no neither had I, found it interesting when they told me because I just assumed I'm just clicky person haha.

But yeah probably just because you're exercising a lot more and in a different way so your joints might be reacting to it. Hope the physio helps! X

  • @Amy Johnston I hyperextend in a lot of my joints, and have had hand pain and seeing a hand consultant (osteo) and shes given me steroids to try reduce the pain, and the next step if that doesnt work is to refer me to a rumatologist  to see if it could be Ehlers Danos syndrome, I really hope its not!

My knees crunch during Barre too, as do my ankles! Its so loud!! Is the same when I walk up the stairs!! lol its like theres bubble wrap in my knees popping!

  • @Anne Hamilton Black Hope the steroids help and the pain is reduced! I imagine that must be really frustrating as you use your hands for everything. The impression I get is that EDS has quite a big spectrum and effects everyone in different ways so might not be the worst diagnosis as the rumatologist should be able to put you on a plan to help prevent or reduce pain in the future.

Haha that's exactly what mine sound like too! At least when you're working out at home nobody can give you funny looks - especially if it is a class like yoga or pilates and the room is so quiet! xx

  • @Amy Johnston Ive been doing reformer pilates the last few years and there doesnt seem to be the same pressure on the joints at there is in floor, so wasnt as bad noise wise, but definetly very noisey at home!! lol Sometimes the noise can gibe you a fright!
Though I will never forget the noise my body made when I had my back adjusted by a chiropractor!! I actually shouted a rude word I got such a fright!! I thought he had broken me!! 🤣

  • @Anne Hamilton Black I'd love to try reformer pilates. It's supposed to be so good for everything -  joints, posture, abs, strength etc. I'm guessing you'll be missing it if youve been doing it for a few years.

I need to get more into normal pilates, it's amazing how difficult it is. If you were to watch a class it looks like you're not doing much but the burn you feel is intense!

Hahah yep I know what you mean - it's like how did that noise come from my body? I imagine you probably gave the chiropractor a fright as well!

  • @Lesley Cosgrave I've always had clicky knees and hips, most of the time is completely painless and doesn't cause me too much trouble but I have had major issues with my knees in the past! If you're experiencing pain with the clicking definitely contact the doctor about it and take some rest queen 🤞🏻
I find that stretching my hamstrings and quads definitely helps, and also trying to strengthen my leg muscles to ease the pressure on my knee 😅

I actually attend a classical osteopath often enough and apparently a lot of knee pain can originate from your hips or back! Mind yourself queen, I know it's so weird hearing cracking and crunching noises from your body but I feel like some of us are just born to be crunchy 😂😂 My boyfriend calls me a rice Krispy most of the time because all my joints crack constantly 😂😂

  • @Amy Johnston definitely missing it but doing mat Pilates through my Pilates school on zoom though so getting some of it.
the more correct your posture and core is the harder it is! I've tried to get my husband to do a few movements after he's remarked it's easy... and he soon changed his mind.
I haven't tried Sinead's Pilates class so might try it over the weekend but love the barre classes!

  • @Lesley Cosgrave omg mine are so bad I used to go to a yoga glass before lockdown with 50s+ and they all gasped at my clicks and clonks and I'm 26😂😂 my knees have always been like that though but my HIPS omg they're so bad atm. Just wondering are yours worse after working out more?? I was thinking about taking an oil supplement but need to research it more? What do ya think? Xx

  • @Niamh Byrne rice Krispy!!!!!!! love it🤣 that's me too, snap, crackle and pop. Thankfully I've no pain, it's just more uncomfortable and makes me feel a bit sick hearing it click every time I take step. 🤢 My back is also not great, so that could very well be linked as you said. I'll keep an eye on it!

  • @Katy Evans I feel like the Tin Man, I need to be oiled!! 😂

I haven't noticed anything with my hips thankfully. But I have found the knee clicking thing has come on over the past 2 weeks or so and I started Queening at the start of January. So I assume the workouts are just putting a bit of strain on them.
There are definitely things you can take, like Joint Care, think Cod Liver Oil is also meant to be good to keep your joints moving. We could be the guinea pigs?!

  • @Lesley Cosgrave hahaha omg me too😂🤣🤣 id deffo be up for giving that a go!! Xxx

  • @Anne Hamilton Black I did Sinead's pilates for the first time on Friday. It's really good actually - was a good way to start the day and clear your mind :) I don't know how t will compare to what you are used to if you've been doing it for years though. That's good you've been keeping up mat pilates in the meantime.

@Lesley Cosgrave I'd be keen to be a guiney pig for any sort of supplements. I've never actually taken any for my joints because I assume they are meant for older people, but my boyfriend always makes fun of me for sounding like an old lady anyway

  • @Lesley Cosgrave Heya Queen, honestly I was like u. I had noticed it more at the very beginning of first working out in the gym & then with Maeve. Now as I'm taking magnesium with zinc I've seen a huge difference. No more click sounds & I don't get that knee locking sensation that I used to get. I cld b just lacking in some vitamin. I would thing about some omega 3 or calcium which I've started taking also. Hope u won't be clicking for 2 much longer Lesley 😊👑👑👑❤️❤️❤️

  • @Audrey Browne Thank you Audrey! You heard it here Queen's, MAGNESIUM and ZINC! I'll give these a go, thanks so much for the recommendation...clicking is off the charts this week 😰

  • @Niamh Byrne ha ha omg that is so cute..a Rice Krispie. That really made me smile right there.

  • Thanks to everyone for sharing all your tips. My hips are very clicky.

  • @Lesley Cosgrave Hi Lesley - Sorry to hear you are getting lots of clicking, I'm a physio so can give a bit of advice but if you are getting pain with the clicking I would definately contact your GP to refer you to physio.  In the meantime I would make sure you dont have any muscle weakness or tightness i.e. strengthen the quads and the hamstrings specifically and also stretch them both.  It could also be that your ITB band is tight so I would stretch this too - if you put it into google you can find a video of how to stretch the ITB band that goes down the side of your leg. Hope that helps! :)
